PAUL HARRIS FELLOW AWARD
PRESENTED TO ROGER HASSLER

Roger Hassler was presented with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award by Will Koran, club chairman of the Rotary Foundation, in the presence of fellow Medina Sunrise Rotarians, Buckeye Schools Superintendent Kent Morgan and Mallory Severance, at the community room of Carlson's Funeral Home in Medina.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges those individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The Rotary Foundation is a non-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. The Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Clevelander Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US$26.50 to more than US$1billion. It has one of the largest and most prestigious international fellowship programs in the world.

Medina Sunrise Rotary Celebrates 22nd Anniversary of Service

Gathered around the Rotary Burr Oak Tree, which is planted on the southwest lawn of Medina's Historic Public Square, Medina Sunrise Rotary celebrated 22 years of service to the community.

"The Burr Oak Tree came from the Morgan Park, Illinois, home of Paul Harris who founded Rotary in 1905," said first club president Becky Shotwell. "It was little more than a 12" sprig when the City of Medina received it in the 1990's and, taking root in the community, now stands proudly at nearly 40 feet tall on Public Square. The Medina Sunrise Rotary Club returns each year in the fall to watch the sun rise over Medina, note the growth of our tree, and renew our commitment to making a difference in the lives of children in our community and beyond, through our time, talents and treasures."

WEEK 1 MATCHUPS UP FOR VOTE

Medina vs. Lakewood – Gibbs
Fairview vs. Rocky River – Fontana
Nordonia vs. Mayfield – Gribble
Bedford vs. Berea-Midpark – Skoczen

Each week, four panelists will nominate a game for the High School Game of the Week poll. The winning team from the selected Browns High School Game of the Week will receive $2,500 for their high school football program. The winning coach and the game’s most valuable player will be honored on the field during a Browns home game. At the conclusion of the season, the Browns will announce the High School Coach of the Year, who will earn additional funds for his program. A video recap of the game will be posted on clevelandbrowns.com.

On Saturday, the “Cleveland Browns High School Football Show, presented by PNC Bank”, a one-hour program that airs from 8-9 a.m. ET on ESPN 850 WKNR, will feature an interview with the winning coach at 8:15 a.m.

"We raised over $14,635 this evening in support of the Rotary Foundation and its End Polio Now campaign," announced John Ross, Chair of the Medina Sunrise Rotary Club's Annual Foundation Dessert Auction.

Rotarians and guests bid generously on home-baked desserts as they enjoyed the hospitality of Rustic Hills, music of talented local singer Marina Strah and fellowship of family and friends.

The Annual Dessert Auction to raise money for the Rotary Foundation has become a tradition for Medina Sunrise Rotarians, who were recently recognized as the #1 club for per-capita giving in the District.  All donations from the auction go directly to the Rotary Foundation and are matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

District Governor Dr. Michael Davanzo explained, "The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, we tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact."

Dr. Michael Davanzo of the Medina Sunrise Rotary Club, accompanied by First Lady Judith Davanzo, was inaugurated NE-Ohio Rotary District Governor 6630 in a formal banner exchange ceremony to mark the beginning of a his 2014-15 term of office.

The upscale event was held at the Root Candles' Community Room which had been graciously provided by The A.I. Root Company.  Over 100 guests enjoyed the music, food and fellowship while extending their congratulations and well wishes to Dr. and Mrs. Davanzo as they assume leadership of the district's 56 Rotary Clubs, 5 College Rotaract Clubs, 16 High School Interact Clubs and 6 International Youth Exchange Students.

“'Light Up Rotary' is our International Theme," declared Dr. Davanzo, "but it is more than our theme. It is how we live in Rotary, how we think in Rotary, how we feel, and how we work. It is how we make a difference — every day, in every club, every community, every district, and every country where we serve.”

"How you Light Up Rotary is up to you,” Davanzo emphasized. “You know where you are strong, you know what your community needs, and you know how you can help."  When we come together as 1.22 million Rotarians to eradicate polio — and we will — we will have proved ourselves a global service organization capable of great things. And we’ll be even better equipped for the next challenge we choose to take on. We’ll have given the world a gift that will endure forever.”

The Medina Sunrise Rotary Club recently partnered with Judge Kevin Dunn on a Build-a-Bear Workshop.

“All our hard-working Rotarian and student volunteers were a big help,” said retired Judge Judy Cross, Rotary project chair. “The Build-A-Bear program, under Medina County Common Pleas Judge Kevin Dunn, was another big success this year as last. The lovable bears will be given to local foster children and distributed to some of the children who currently attend Medina County’s Windfall School.”

Rotary Club President John Ross added, “We are pleased to continue our partnership with Judge Kevin Dunn on such a worthy project. The Build-a-Bear program is a perfect extension of our Medina Sunrise Rotary mission of ‘Making a difference in the lives of children in our community and beyond through our time, talents and treasures.’”

As holiday-dressed children gathered around the Christmas Tree to sing a Yuletide favorite, "Jingle Bells," Santa Claus suddenly appeared to the wonder and delight of all who had come to celebrate the Medina Sunrise Rotary annual Family Christmas Party.

Connor Jardine couldn't wait to be the first one to run across the room, jump up and give Santa a big welcome hug!  Rotary Club president Daryl Kubilis, our event organizers Becky Shotwell and David Heath and the staff of Rustic Hills Country Club were certainly busy helping Santa Claus with the presents he brought for all the good little girls and boys.

A mild December evening with fine food, friendship and and the spirit of giving at Christmas was quietly concluded with Santa Claus joining in as everyone held hands to sing "Silent Night."

Humanitarian grants from The Rotary Foundation enable Rotarians to increase their support of international service projects that can help in areas such as this lettuce farm in Niger. Contributions to Rotary Foundation funds enable Rotarians to carry out humanitarian and educational projects.

Donors may direct their gifts to three main funds: the Annual Programs Fund, which supports the Foundation’s humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs worldwide; the Permanent Fund, which provides an endowment; and the PolioPlus Fund.
