Cups Cafe

Medina business  and service clubs offer Youth Outreach Services at Local CUPS Cafe. Tim Van Arsdale has created a place in Medina, which opened its doors in November 2007, where young people facing a dark time in their lives can pause to catch their breath and hang with their friends over a soft drink and a sandwich. CUPS Café is a nonprofit community café at 126 N. Court Street, that doesn’t need a cash register because everything on the menu is free.

We are encouraged by our community partnerships with Medina Sunrise Rotary* (youth literacy and Life Skills Training programs),, Let's Make a Difference (after school programs), and STEM (OSU Extension Office' s vocational programs for youth).

*Medina Sunrise Rotary and Pride One donated the AD-compliant additions plus the after-school student & instructor laptops.

ROTARY DISTRICT 4-WAY SPEECH CONTEST FINALS
ROTARY DISTRICT 4-WAY SPEECH CONTEST FINALS Apr. 12, 2025
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Springfield High School
Subject
The purpose of the speech is to apply the principles of Rotary International’s 4 Way Test to a current ethical issue. Students are challenged to identify a topic they feel passionate about and to adopt a point of view from which they will seek to persuade others. It should be something from the speaker’s personal experience or general knowledge. There are no restrictions regarding the choice of topic as long as it is not blatantly offensive.

Names of Medina Sunrise Rotary Winners, from Cloverleaf High School:
#1 Vanessa Monhemius
#2 Zach Bronson
#3 Leah Archer

Each part of the Four-Way Test should be addressed during the speech. They should be specifically stated, as the intent of the speech is to use the 4 Way Test to resolve an issue. Each part could be used to prove either a positive or negative point.

The District level contest is held in two rounds, a semi-final round and the finals. Both rounds take place on April 12, 2025
Winners from the Club level are grouped at random to compete in the semi-final round. One winner from each group advances to the Finals.

How
Club Chairs must reach out to High Schools and establish relationships with Principals and a Point of Contact (could be a teacher or an administrator). Please feel free to customize the ‘Invitation letter to Principal’ and PowerPoint presentation to cultivate relationships with schools.

What
Each club must decide what it thinks are appropriate prizes, and how many prizes are to be awarded.  Clubs are eligible to advance two (2) winners per school to the District level contest. Clubs that have more than 1 school in their jurisdiction can determine the number of students that they send to the District contest (subject to the two (2) winners per school rule).

Clubs are responsible to register and pay admission fees for students to participate at the District level contest, prior to March 25, 2025.
Prizes at the District level will be*:
1st place:  $1200.00
2nd place: $900.00
3rd place:  $700.00
Honorable Mentions: $200.00

BIRTHDAY OF ROTARY FOUNDER PAUL HARRIS (1868)
BIRTHDAY OF ROTARY FOUNDER PAUL HARRIS (1868) Apr. 19, 2025

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul P. Harris.

Harris  was born on 19 April 1868 in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. At age 3, he moved to Wallingford, Vermont, where he grew up in the care of his paternal grandparents. He attended the University of Vermont and Princeton University and received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1891.

In 1896, Harris settled in Chicago and opened a law practice. Four years later, he met fellow attorney Bob Frank for dinner on Chicago’s North Side.

Harris eventually persuaded several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in downtown Chicago for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.

In February 1907, Harris was elected the third president of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Toward the end of his presidency, he worked to expand Rotary beyond the city.

Harris died on 27 January 1947 in Chicago at age 78, after a prolonged illness. Before his death, he made it known that he preferred contributions to The Rotary Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Rotary has grown to be a global network of more than 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who are organized into 45,000 clubs and embrace a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK
WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK Apr. 24, 2025 - Apr. 30, 2025

World Immunization Week: Protecting children through lifesaving vaccines

This year's observance of World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, signals a renewed effort to prevent an estimated 2 to 3 million deaths worldwide from vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, by closing immunization gaps. The extensive polio-eradication infrastructure created by Rotary, its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and governments and health ministries provides a model for this effort.

Rotary, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) joined together in 1988 to form GPEI with the goal of protecting the world's children by eradicating polio. At that time, the disease paralyzed more than 1,000 people -- most of them young children – worldwide every day. Over the years, Rotary and its partners have reduced the number of polio cases by 99 percent, to fewer than 400 cases in 2014, and there are now only three countries in which polio transmission has never been stopped.

"Rotarians have played a key role in bringing the world to the cusp of polio eradication," says Mike McGovern, chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee. "They have contributed more than $1.3 billion to polio eradication, they have petitioned their governments to support the cause, and they have donated countless hours to immunize children throughout the world. These achievements have laid the groundwork for a lasting legacy for the world's children."

Rotary and its partners are looking to carry out a legacy health plan Ensuring that the knowledge generated and lessons learned from years of polio eradication activities are shared with other health initiatives.

DISTRICT 6630 CONFERENCE OF CLUBS
DISTRICT 6630 CONFERENCE OF CLUBS Apr. 25, 2025 - Apr. 26, 2025 Marriott East Warrensville Heights

Our District 6630 Conference (DISCON 2025) this year will be at the Marriott East in Warrensville Heights on Friday April 25 and Saturday April 26.  The District Conference is for ALL Rotarians!!!  Registration links are available here for the event and hotel .  I particularly like the layout of this hotel for our event.  Our House of Friendship - displays of projects and other areas of interest - will be just outside the ballroom where social time will occur and you will gather between events.

REGISTRATION: https://rotarydistrict6630.org/events/2025-district-6630-conference-of-clubs-and-le/

Friday will start with our traditional Celebration of Life for the Rotarians we have lost in the last year.  We will have our annual district business meeting between the Celebration and lunch.  Our speaker at lunch will be Scott Simon, author of Scare Your Soul: 7 Powerful Principles to Harness Fear and Lead Your Most Courageous Life.  Scott will talk about conquering anxiety by planfully facing your fears on a daily basis.  On Friday afternoon, we will have learning assembly sessions on subjects including mental health and anxiety, growing Rotary and our impact, and public image.  On Friday evening we will have social time and informal buffet stations with a magician moving from group to group through the evening performing magic just for you!  The Geauga West Club will be hosting a hospitality suite to continue the fellowship to close the night.

Saturday morning will open with a buffet breakfast followed by learning sessions on growth, companion clubs, youth exchange and a very fun Rotary 101 Jeopardy-style game.  Our lunch will be our Celebration of Youth with Interact, Youth Exchange and Four Way Test Speech Contest winners.  On Saturday afternoon we will have President-Elect Leadership 6630 sessions.  In parallel with those sessions, a representative from Clubrunner will be in a breakout room to answer your questions about Clubrunner and the new version known as Nova.  In another breakout area, members of our Youth Protection Committee will be addressing  your questions on youth protection and training.

At dinner on Saturday, we will have a panel discussion during which we discuss how our various organizations can work together to make Northeast Ohio an even better place to live. Our 1630+ members in Northeast Ohio recognize the power of partnerships.  This panel is the beginning of a conversation about creating strong partnerships between service and philanthropic organizations in Northeast Ohio.  Participants in the panel are:  Karen Hrdlicka, Director, The Center for Family Philanthropy at the Akron Community Foundation, Brenda Cummins, Director, Philanthropic Services at the Cleveland Foundation, Penny Forster, Director, Community Impact, Cleveland Guardians and Britta Latz, Executive Director, MedWish MEdworks.

Following dinner, the Mentor Club will be hosting a hospitality suite to continue the discussion and fellowship!

I hope to see each and every one of you there!  I promise you will have fun, learn something and be inspired to grow Rotary and make Northeast Ohio and the world a better place to live!

Warm Regards,
Dale
District 6630 Governor Dale Smith, 2024-25
